Shark Bites Swimmer Off Del Mar Beach
Man Requires Surgery After Multiple Bites
A 46-year-old swimmer was bitten multiple times by a shark while swimming off Del Mar Beach on Sunday morning, requiring surgery for his injuries.
Swimmer Part of Ocean Swimmers Group
The victim, who has not been publicly identified, is a member of a group of ocean swimmers who regularly train in the waters north of Del Mar. According to witnesses, the group was swimming about 100 yards offshore when the attack occurred.
Significant Injuries, Quick Response
The swimmer suffered significant lacerations to his leg and foot. Fellow swimmers and lifeguards rushed to his aid, pulling him out of the water and applying pressure to his wounds until paramedics arrived.
The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery for his injuries. His condition is currently unknown.
Warning Signs, Beach Closure
Following the attack, officials posted warning signs along Del Mar Beach, advising swimmers and surfers to stay out of the water due to the presence of sharks.
The beach was closed for several hours while authorities investigated the incident. It has since been reopened, but swimmers are urged to use caution.
Similar Incidents in the Area
This is not the first shark attack in the Del Mar area in recent years. In 2022, a 57-year-old surfer was bitten by a shark off Solana Beach, just a few miles south of Del Mar.
Experts recommend that swimmers be aware of their surroundings and avoid swimming alone or in areas known to be frequented by sharks.
